A biodiversity Hotspot
Tiwai IslandTiwai Island is located in the Southern Province, 15 kilometres from the town of Potoru on the Moa River in south-eastern Sierra Leone
It is one of the largest inland islands in the country covering an area of 1,200 hectares. The climate on the island is tropical with rainy season between May and October and dry season between December and March.
Research and studies of the forest and its wildlife have been conducted since the early 1980s. More recently, research has been undertaken by undergraduate and graduate students of Njala University, Sierra Leone and University of Illinois, USA and has included a wide range of inventory, including studies on avifauna, flora, rattans, monitoring mammals through photo-trapping, reassessment of the primate population, amphibian and insect surveys and ecotourism.
